16 Days of Activism

Brimbank Council is again participating in the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence campaign, which started on 25 November with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

The Respect Women: ‘Call It Out’ (Respect Is) initiative coincides with the 16 Days of Activism and encourages Victorians to take action and end all forms of violence by calling out sexual harassment, sexism and disrespect towards women and girls.

More than one in three women have experienced men’s violence. On average, a woman is killed by a man she knows every 10 days, and in 2024 that number is much higher. Safety for women is not a given in any community – and neither is respect.

Brimbank Mayor Cr Thuy Dang said Council is committed to preventing violence against women, promoting gender equality and enabling victim-survivors of violence to access the supports they need.

“Local Government should take a lead role in advancing gender equity and preventing family violence and violence against women.

“We can make a difference by raising awareness in our community, working in partnership with local support services, and advocating for further investment in prevention and early intervention programs.

“We are committed to sharing knowledge, demonstrating best practice and strengthening our community.

“Our involvement in the 16 Days of Activism is an important demonstration of Council’s commitment to gender equity and community safety – contributing to the broader health and wellbeing of our community.”
