Our NAIDOC Week celebrations from 5-12 July honoured the history, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Council would love to thank everyone who joined us at our special event on 9 July at Watergardens Shopping Centre.
From the Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony to the flag raising and powerful multi-generational conversations about the history of NAIDOC, it was a meaningful reminder of the importance of truth-telling, reconciliation and continuing to strengthen our relationships with First Nations communities.
The event included performances, cultural workshops, and a feast of free activities for kids, from arts and crafts with the Aunties, to facepainting, indigenous storytelling and a yarning circle with Uncle Shane.
This year’s NAIDOC Week was even more special as it celebrated its ’50 Years of Deadly’ milestone. It was wonderful to see families enjoying the activities and exploring a special ‘poster gallery’ featuring NAIDOC artwork from each decade.

NAIDOC Week reminded us that learning about history, celebrating diversity and working together helps build stronger and more respectful communities for everyone.
