Adult Learners Week 2025

This year is the 30th anniversary of UNESCO’s Adult Learners Week in Australia, and we’re celebrating with a range of events and activities from 1-8 September at Brimbank Libraries, Neighbourhood Houses and Community Centres. Download the brochure now

Adult Learners Week shines a spotlight on the importance of lifelong learning and offers an opportunity to discover new interests and skills.

This year’s lineup includes sessions on topics such as food nutrition, growing and cooking, and practical advice on preparing for the age pension. For those with a creative streak, workshops in the creative industries will also be available. Each session is designed to offer practical knowledge and skills that you can take home and build upon.

The Brimbank Lifelong Learning Strategy recognises that learning occurs continuously throughout life. By learning, you become more resilient and able to respond to our changing world by developing your skills and knowledge. And we get stronger as a community as a result. Happy learning.

Meet local adult leaner, Saba

Local adult learner, Saba, found learning opportunities that have opened doors and enriched her life.

Saba came to Australia from Pakistan after her wedding in 2007 and has lived in Brimbank for almost 11 years. After migrating, Saba loved being a full-time ‘mumma’ to her three children. Saba pursued studies when her children became more independent. She enrolled into a Diploma in Mental Health in 2023 after a friend’s recommendation. Being a fulltime mother, it was a challenge adjusting her mindset and routine.

‘I am absolutely loving this course; I never knew I would be the right person for the course. I have gained immense respect for mental health and people working in this rewarding industry, especially being a major stigma back home in Pakistan.’

Saba has been volunteering with Cairnlea Community Hub for 5 years, this experience led to an opportunity to complete 160 student placement hours with Hunt Club Community and Arts Centre. She was involved in the ‘Women’s Wellness Program’ enhancing her communication and facilitation skills. ‘I built confidence speaking to diverse people, asking questions, I was really using my body language and active listening skills.’ Saba would like to study counselling in the future after some employment experience.

Saba’s placement supervisor referred her to career counselling delivered by VU Skills and Job Centres at Brimbank Learning Future’s. ‘I highly recommend this program for people looking for a job. They supported with revising my resume. I look forward to contacting the service again once I have completed my studies and ready to look for work.’

‘One advice I give my younger self, ‘’don’t be scared to ask for help, in the fear of being judged.’’ I feel I have been a great role model for my children, studying as an adult learner. My son said I am so proud of you mum for going back to school.’
