Brimbank City Council has called on the Victorian Government to fulfill its commitment and deliver on the full Albion Station redevelopment to properly unlock the precinct and realise its true potential.
The Government first announced an $80 million funding commitment for the station’s redevelopment in October 2022 as part of Stage 1 of the Melbourne Airport Rail project.
Council supports the delivery of a safe, accessible and highly connected precinct as both a high-functioning transport hub and a vibrant community destination, and to go beyond a like-for-like station replacement.
Preliminary designs for the station include several improvements including a new pedestrian overpass, entrance place on the eastern side of the station and more pedestrian paths.
However, despite rising construction costs in recent years and an expanded scope to include upgrades to Tottenham Station, there has been no increases in funding for the project since the initial announcement.
Council’s vision for the new Albion Station includes:
• A substantial upgrade of the existing underpass
• A continuous shared user path along the eastern side of the station connecting to the existing network
• Upgrading the eastern Ballarat Road underpass
• A direct pedestrian connection between the station precinct and Foundry Road
• Expanding the eastern side of the proposed station forecourt
Brimbank Deputy Mayor Cr Maria Kerr said the Albion Station redevelopment was critical to our city’s future.
“Without expanding the scope of the project to include Council’s vision, the redevelopment will not only be a missed opportunity, but it will hold back Brimbank’s future growth.
“Connectivity is the key – we need the new station to link in with communities on either side and provide a fully integrated transport hub and public space linked with the surrounding neighbourhoods.
“The rebuilt Albion Station will play an important role in shaping the precinct’s future identity and growth. Not only will it transform the precinct, it will unlock more economic and social opportunities for Brimbank and the West.”
