On Saturday 28 June, Brimbank Council’s Environment team hosted a community planting day at Bon Thomas Grasslands in Deer Park.
The event attracted over 100 local residents, including over 50 members from the nearby Derrimut Hindu temple (Melbourne Mandir) and a large group of enthusiastic young people from International Peace Youth Group.
Community members volunteered their time to plant 5000 native shrubs, grasses and wildflowers to help beautify the grasslands and provide much-needed habitat for native wildlife.
Children also had a chance to make and take home their own ‘Monster Pots’ and as well as compete in the ‘Grassland Games’. Everyone was rewarded for their hard work with some delicious Vegetarian Indian food (and hot Masala Chai!) provided by the wonderful Melbourne Mandir kitchen team.
This event is part of Council’s Nature Places Capital Works project at Bon Thomas Reserve and was supported by a restorative grant from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA). We would like to thank our partners for this event: Melbourne Mandir, International Peace Youth Group and Friends of Iramoo.
