Brimbank Learning Futures Skills Lab’s barbering program finished up at the end of March, ending up with a visit to a local barbershop to understand the operational workings of a barbering business.
Over the eight-week course, the young people made incredible strides in their barbering ability, confidence, business knowledge, and connection to community.
What was achieved
Participants had the opportunity to cut the hair of local young people at Brimbank Youth Service’s Summer Sundown event, at the Youth Drop-in at Errington Reserve, and in a classroom setting.
Participants have gained long-lasting mentors and peers and now have a solid technical skillset to start work at a barbershop or start their own side hustle.
Here are some of the learning and teaching moments shared during the program:
- A young person who was formerly part of a gang and running from police graduated to cutting the hair of a police officer.
- Two cousins developed a passion for barbering and started their own barbering business in their garage.
- A young person reconnected with his father’s passion for barbering and decided he too would pursue it as a career. As a result, he was able to develop healthy relationships, build his confidence and make new connections.
Thanks to Brimbank Learning Futures Skills Lab: Barbering, a group of young people from all walks of life have new mentors and increased connection to community and services.
