Brimbank seeks apology to Vietnamese-Australian community

Brimbank City Council has written to the Minister for Police, the Honourable Lisa Neville MP, regarding Police conduct at a FIFA World Cup Qualifier match between Australia and Vietnam. The match took place at AAMI Park Melbourne on 27 January 2022.

Council has asked the Minister to investigate incidences where Victoria Police Officers requested the removal of clothing or iconography related to the Cờ Vàng flag, a symbol of many Vietnamese-Australians and their refugee experience.

The letter formally requests an explanation of the action of Victoria Police, an apology to members of the Vietnamese-Australian community directly and indirectly impacted, and an assurance that incidences of this nature will not occur again.

Read the letter in English or read the letter in Vietnamese.
