Brimbank City Council welcomes the announcement of $500,000 in funding from the Australian Government towards the Sunshine Energy Park.
The funding is part of the Australian Government’s urban Precincts and Partnerships Program and will contribute towards planning for the transformation of the 74-hectare site from a former quarry and closed landfill site into the envisioned new Sunshine Energy Park.
Brimbank Mayor Cr Thuy Dang met with Dr Daniel Mulino MP to welcome the funding.
“This $500,000 in funding is a critical first step to bringing our community’s vision to life – transforming this large, ideally located site into the Sunshine Energy Park,” says Mayor Cr Dang.
“As demonstrated in our 2024 Sunshine Energy Park Vision Plan, the Brimbank community sees great potential in transforming this old quarry and closed landfill site into community focused open spaces, as well as cultural and recreational centres. It’s great to see the Australian Government has recognised its potential too.”
Sunshine Energy Park is an important project, to create a new ‘central park’ servicing the Sunshine CBD and the Albion Quarter urban renewal area, which has the potential to become a destination of local, regional, and state significance.
The funding, announced today by Dr Daniel Mulino MP, enables critical planning to commence the feasibility study and master plan, stakeholder consultation, establishing partnerships and the delivery of a comprehensive business case.
This follows community consultation in May 2024 which informed the Sunshine Energy Park Vision Plan, demonstrating the community’s desire for a vibrant community landmark that encourages connection to Country, sports, recreation, education, and environmental sustainability.
The envisioned Sunshine Energy Park will transform the area into a new 74-hectare premium parkland for Melbourne’s west, including:
- a State-significant stadium and sports fields
- extensive tree planting
- a solar farm
- cycling and walking tracks
- a CERES-style sustainability hub
- an extensive urban forest and wetland system, and
- new play spaces.
“We look forward to continue working with the Brimbank community, stakeholders, government agencies, and elected officials on transforming this site and realising its full potential,” said Mayor Cr Dang.
The slated feasibility study will determine how the redevelopment will achieve its objectives of enhancing quality of life for local residents, improving connectivity for people and businesses, and preserve the natural environment through ecological regeneration and rehabilitation of waterways.
