Brimbank welcomes investments in kindergartens

Brimbank Council welcomes the Victorian Government’s announcement to redevelop the Dempster Park Children’s and Community Centre in North Sunshine, and the St Albans West Kindergarten, to deliver more kinder places in Brimbank.

“Brimbank welcomes the Victorian Government’s investment in new kindergartens, opening up early years education for many more of our youngest residents,” says Brimbank Mayor Cr Thuy Dang. “We’re pleased that more children and families in St Albans and North Sunshine will be able to access the kindergarten and early childhood education services they need to thrive.”

These projects are funded by the Victorian Government and Brimbank City Council through the Building Block Partnership. The Victorian School Building Authority will manage the build at St Albans West with Brimbank Council responsible for works at the Dempster Park Children’s and Community Centre.

Dempster Park Children’s and Community Centre, on Phoenix Street, Sunshine North, will have 121 kindergarten places when it opens in 2027. The new facility will include two sessional kindergarten rooms and two maternal and child health consulting rooms. It will also offer an outdoor learning environment, a community hall and other community and family services.

“These new and upgraded facilities will give children the best start in life, while supporting parents and carers with the services they need for their growing families,” says Mayor Cr Dang. “We look forward to delivering the new facilities for our communities, so that many children can enjoy the amazing new spaces.”

St Albans West Kindergarten on Stevens Road, St Albans will be replaced with a new two-room modular building, which will increase  the number of kindergarten places up to 66 children at a time, when it is completed in 2026. It will also include a new outdoor learning environment and car parking.

The Victorian Government has recently introduced major changes to kindergarten through its Best Start Best Life reforms. This includes offering three and four-year-olds free kindergarten and increased kindergarten hours, which will help meet the increasing demand for sessional kindergarten in our municipality.

These welcome reforms are transforming early childhood education and helping children and young families thrive in Brimbank.
