Council’s vision is for a safe and welcoming community where everyone belongs and lives a life free from harm.
We’ve taken a decisive step forward in protecting the Brimbank community with the formal adoption of a ‘Statement of Commitment for a Safe and Inclusive Brimbank’.
The statement is built on inclusion, harm prevention, collaboration and a focus on the local community.
Mayor of Brimbank, Cr Virginia Tachos welcomed the adoption of the Statement of Commitment at the Council Meeting on 17 February 2026, saying it is both timely and necessary.
“Community safety is a top priority in Brimbank, especially right now,” Mayor Tachos said.
“This adopted Statement of Commitment sends a clear message: community safety is everyone’s responsibility, and Council is stepping up.
“We are actively investing in prevention, with a focus on safer streets and public spaces, to preventing gender-based violence and promoting gender equity.
“Safe cities are realised through strong partnerships, inclusive communities and early intervention,” Mayor Tachos said.
The Statement of Commitment for a Safer and Inclusive Brimbank outlines how community safety is a shared responsibility across all levels of government, police, service providers, business and the community.
The statement includes a vision, key principles, Council’s role and commitments, with three strategic priorities:
- Stronger Communities – commitment to building a community where people feel safe, welcome and included.
- Safer Streets and Council owned Public Spaces – commitment to the design and maintenance of Council owned and managed public places to promote safety and support social connection.
- Preventing Gender Based Violence – commitment to preventing family violence, improving health outcomes and ensuring gender equity in our facilities and programs.
The statement has been informed by community engagement and Council consulted with the community for four weeks in December 2025.
“Thank you all those who took the time to review the draft and provide feedback – your input is very much appreciated. We want this statement to reflect our shared commitment to the safety and wellbeing of everyone in Brimbank,” Mayor Tachos said.
