Christmas craft fun

Looking for some DIY activities with the kiddos this Christmas?

Here are two easy to follow videos for you to get your Christmas craft on and have some festive fun!

Make sure you play some Christmas tunes in the background to really get your creativity going strong.

Salt dough ornaments

A perfect craft project for toddlers and young children, these decorative ornaments are made with just a few simple ingredients.

They’ll look fancy anywhere and make great gifts to give out during the holiday season.

Watch the video tutorial:

Materials and equipment:

You’ll need to use an oven for this project.

Baking equipment:

  • mixing bowl
  • spatula
  • rolling pin
  • cookie cutters
  • baking paper
  • oven tray.

The ingredients for making the salt dough are:

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • 1/3 cup of salt.

To decorate the ornaments you’ll need:

  • paintbrushes
  • colourful paint
  • some glitter paint or glue
  • textas (optional).

You can use colourful pipe cleaners and wooden beads as well, or you can just use string or ribbon if that’s all you can get your hands on.

Optional: If you want to hang them outside and you’re worried they’ll get wet in the rain you can put some sealer or varnish on them as well.

Giant selfie photo frame

This is a step-by-step video tutorial on how to make a life-size photo frame. Get the young ones to pick the festive theme to inspire the decorations. It’s a fun way to challenge creativity and resourcefulness.

Materials and equipment:

  • Foam board (from Bunnings Project Panel White Corflute, 900mm x 600mm x 3mm, $6.50)
  • Measuring tape or ruler + a marker
  • Stanley knife
  • Scissors
  • PVA glue (optional)
  • Masking tape (one full roll)
  • Hot glue gun (plus extra refills of glue cartridges)
  • Brown paper from Office Works (one full roll)

*Gift wrapping paper will also work

*If you can’t get the foam board then try cardboard – I did, and it was fine. Just a bit floppy.

*(optional) Paint + glitter + brushes + water tub + palette

Ideas for the frame decorations:

How you choose to decorate the frame depends on the theme of your celebration… Is it Christmas, New Year, Hanukkah? What kind of get together are you celebrating?

For mine I used:

  • Christmas ornaments (I got mine from Big W)
  • Tinsel
  • Pom poms
  • Stickers
  • Stick on gift topping ribbons
  • Gift tag gold stars
  • Mini silver baubles
  • Fake mistletoe on wire
  • Stick on foam letters and numbers
