Council has issued an Emergency Order for the demolition of the Former Council office building at 6-18 Alexandra Avenue, Sunshine.
Safety of the community is paramount, and the order for demolition of the former Council office building has been issued following assessment of the structure of the building as being unsafe.
In mid-November, the office of the Municipal Building Surveyor issued an Emergency Order to cause the evacuation of the building at 6-18 Alexandra Avenue, Sunshine on 2 December 2025. The Emergency Order was issued to allow the assessment of the condition of the building by a team of building experts.
Following preliminary assessments on 2 and 3 December 2025, the Municipal Building Surveyor issued an Emergency Demolition Order to demolish part of the building that was assessed to be structurally unsafe. These parts were the western brick wall, the front glazed mural external wall, and the cantilevered front portion of the building. The heritage mural has been deconstructed as part of these earlier works. It has been documented and shipped to storage. No use has been determined for the mural at this stage.
Since the partial demolition order was issued, the final independent engineer’s report has confirmed the building is no longer serviceable and that there is a risk of structural failure which may cause a risk to human life and Council has issued the order for the demolition of the building.
Demolition works will commence immediately by licenced demolition contractors at the cost of the owner of the site.
