Exploring a greener future for Alfrieda Street

Researchers from the University of Melbourne are investigating how community ideas can make streets cooler, safer, and more liveable by adding trees and other green spaces.

The ‘Re-imagining streets with green infrastructure’ project brings together residents, researchers and other stakeholders to explore potential street improvements through a process of co-design. The next phase of the project will focus on the residential stretch of Alfrieda Street, St Albans.

The team are inviting local community members to participate in a series of three co-design workshops throughout October and November to develop a shared vision of what a future Alfrieda Street could look like. Registrations are essential and can be made by completing an expression of interest form at the project website

The first workshop will be held on Monday, October 6th, 6-8pm.

The project previously ran in Breese Street, Brunswick, and resulted in a design idea to add 32 trees as well as new gardens and social spaces to the street.

The research project does not involve on-ground changes to the street, but explores opportunities to improve streets in a way that suits local needs and values. The residential stretch of Alfrieda Street has been chosen in consultation with Brimbank City Council. The research project is independent to the Council’s master planning process.

This research project is funded by Horticulture Innovation Australia.
