Gardens for Wildlife

When hot days make the outdoors unbearable for many of us, where do Brimbank’s native animals go?

If they are lucky, they find a cool, welcoming space like Carmen’s lush garden in Sunshine.

Carmen has transformed her garden into a haven for local wildlife with shady trees, ceramic pots filled with water, and diverse indigenous plants.

Carmen is a star volunteer for Council’s Gardens for Wildlife program. She and other volunteers visit Brimbank residents and help them make their gardens more welcoming to native wildlife.

“There are many species, plants and animals, that are constantly losing their habitat. This program gives me the chance to share this awareness with more people,” Carmen said.

Carmen and her family love watching wildlife enjoy their garden, especially her seven-year-old daughter Miranda. Even in the heart of suburbia, much to their delight, local frogs, beautiful birds, lizards and insects regularly visit their yard.

Renters and property owners in Brimbank can apply for a free visit from trained volunteers, like Carmen. Find out more at brimbank.vic.gov.au/gardens-for-wildlife
