Have your say on our Draft Climate Emergency Strategy

Preparing for the challenges that come with a changing climate while maintaining the health and wellbeing of our local community.

This is the focus of Brimbank City Council’s new draft Climate Emergency Strategy which is now open for community consultation.

The strategy prioritises five areas: building strength to cope with the health impacts of climate change, protecting biodiversity, transitioning to renewable energy use, reducing waste and cutting emissions.

Council first declared a climate emergency in 2019 and this led to the development of our first Climate Emergency Plan in 2020.

The new strategy expands on the 2020 Plan and follows a series of consultations across Brimbank since 2024 on how our community can best respond to climate change.

Protecting the community’s health is the priority of the strategy, which also commits Council to transitioning all its buildings and facilities to renewable energy, and supporting local households and businesses to make the change.

Other key objectives include continued greening, waste reduction and increased recycling outcomes across the municipality.

A Council spokesperson said it was important to hear directly from the community on how the effects of climate change impact them.

“We want Brimbank residents to have their say on what’s most important to them and how we can best tackle climate change together.”
