Help us to manage cats and dogs in Brimbank

Council would love to hear from dog and cat owners and others on how to better manage our pets. You can provide your feedback on the Draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026–2029.

The draft Plan provides a four-year framework for managing dogs and cats in Brimbank with data from June 2025 indicating that Brimbank has 6,726 registered dogs and 3,071 registered cats. The draft plan applies to dogs and cats only, and does not cover other pets, feral animals or native wildlife.

Brimbank Mayor, Cr Thuy Dang said there are about 10,000 cats and dogs registered in Brimbank.

“Council’s Draft Domestic Animal Management Plan sets out how we will manage domestic animals in our community,” the Mayor said.

“We want to support our resident pet owners, and ensure they understand their rights and responsibilities.

“We invite all community members to help shape our Domestic Animal Management Plan sharing your views on Council’s Your Say Page.”

Prepared in line with the Domestic Animals Act 1994, the draft plan sets out programs and strategies to support responsible pet ownership, encourage registration and microchipping, and ensure compliance with animal management laws.

It also outlines actions to reduce over-population and high euthanasia rates, manage dangerous or restricted breed dogs, and minimise nuisance issues such as barking, roaming and litter.

Importantly, the draft plan also addresses community safety by reducing the risk of dog attacks, while promoting positive relationships between pets, their owners and the wider community.
