‘IDAHOBIT’ (the International Day Against Homophobia Biphobia Interphobia and Transphobia)

Recognising IDAHOBIT

This year IDAHOBIT (the International Day Against Homophobia Biphobia Interphobia and Transphobia) will be held on 17 May.

This annual awareness day marks the date in 1990 when homosexuality was removed from the World Health Organisations’ Classification of Diseases. The awareness date is also set to recognise that the LGBTQIA+ communities continue to face discrimination and that everyone can make a difference.

Supporting our LGBTQIA+ community

Council supports our LGBTQIA+ community and we stand against discrimination.

IDAHOBIT is one of the ways Council demonstrates to the community that we actively oppose homophobia and all forms of discrimination.

This year Council is supporting and acknowledging the awareness day by sharing information via social media about the history of IDAHOBIT and why it is still as important as ever today.

In addition, we will be highlighting a story about the achievements of one of our diverse and thriving community members within Brimbank.

Young people aged 14-25years can also enter a Brimbank Libraries ‘Love is Love’ Mural Competition, celebrating love and acceptance. Entries close 31 May. For more information on the competition and how to enter click here.

Council will also be flying the Progress Pride Flag at the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre and St Albans Community Centre and supporting Pride Month in June.

Brimbank Mayor, Cr Thuy Dang said IDAHOBIT aims to raise awareness about discrimination, violence, and challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.

“IDAHOBIT is a call for unity, and I believe each and every one of us can help build inclusion.

“Council recognise the unique needs, challenges and aspirations of LGBTQIA+ communities, and strives to create a place where all our people belong.  We work hard to achieve a safe and inclusive community through our services, events and programs.

“Council is proud of our first LGBTQIA+ Action Plan for 2024 to 2028, which empowers the LGBTQIA+ communities to feel included, safe and supported,” Mayor Dang said.
