Thousands of tonnes of high-quality compost have been produced for Victorian farms, thanks to the many thousands of Brimbank residents who have been recycling their food and garden waste in their food and garden organics bin, also known as a FOGO bins.
These FOGO Bin bikers (pictured) and their travelling billboards are spreading the word on the benefits of using a FOGO bin for food waste – including everything from fruit and vegetables, to meat, breads and dairy scraps.
Brimbank Mayor, Cr Thuy Dang joined the FOGO bin bikers to share fresh fruit and news on the environmental benefits we can all help achieve by using a FOGO bin at home.
“Using a FOGO bin is one easy we can all help protect the environment,” Mayor Dang said.
“Council’s food and garden organics bins are collected fortnightly and taken to a recycling facility to be turned into nutrient rich compost for use in parks, gardens and farms.
“If every Brimbank household used our FOGO service, we could drastically reduce the greenhouse gas emissions we generate. This saving would be the equivalent of taking 17,582 cars off the road each year.”
Food scraps make up about 50 per cent of the contents in the garbage bin from the average Brimbank home. Right now, all this this food waste ends up in landfill creating harmful greenhouse gases with disastrous consequences for the environment.
