This NAIDOC Week in Brimbank, we’re holding a range of activations to celebrate the history, culture and enduring knowledge of First Nation peoples and their connections to Country.
The events are free and open to everyone.
About NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The week is celebrated not only in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. It’s a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities, to learn more about our First Nations culture and history, and to show your support.
The 2025 theme is ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy’. It celebrates the achievements of the past, and the bright future ahead, empowered by the strength of First Nations communities, their vision for the future and the legacy they continue to share with everyone.
Brimbank Mayor, Cr Thuy Dang said: “Council is proudly walking this journey through the delivery of our “Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan for 2024 to 2026.”
“We’re listening, learning, and working in partnership to build a more respectful and inclusive city.
“Come along to our NAIDOC Week activations to join in the celebrations.”
Flag raising ceremony – you’re invited!
Come along to our flag raising ceremony on Tuesday 8 July 2025, from 10-11:30am at Sunvale Community Park, Neil Street, Sunshine.
The event includes a First Nations artwork launch, smoking ceremony, Welcome to Country by a Wurundjeri Elder and flag raising ceremony.
Join us for the launch of the newly restored Five elements artwork at Sunvale Park. This is created by Indigenous artists Aunty Lee-Anne Clarke, Aunty Mandi Barton and Dr. Helen Bodycomb, who will be there to speak about their work and answer questions.
Then head over to the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre on Hampshire Road, Sunshine, to see the Occupation Studies: Agriculture exhibition presented by artist Tahlia Palmer in the Level 1 Gallery. This art reflects on Aboriginal relationships to land and ongoing connection to Country.
Projections of these works are also available nightly on the back wall of the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre. Head to the rear of 301 Hampshire Road, Sunshine, to see the projections. This is complemented by the series of NAIDOC inspired illuminations, by Aunty Lee-Anne Clarke in the windows of the Sunshine Library.
