Brimbank Council is aware of recent instances of anti-social behaviour near the Brimbank and Civic Community Centre and Sunshine Library on Hampshire Road.
Brimbank Libraries are public spaces where everyone should feel welcome and safe and we work hard to ensure the safety of the community and our staff. This includes addressing specific incidents within our buildings and the broader issues that contribute to anti-social behaviour.
Within our libraries, examples of actions include:
- Upholding our formal expected standards of behaviour
- Asking people to leave who fail to meet these standards and banning people who don’t comply
- Increasing security, patrols by local laws officers, street cleaning and
- Boosting training and support for Council staff and security guards.
More broadly our actions include:
- Advocating strongly for greater State and Federal Government support for mental health, including funding for outreach workers to engage with people in and around our libraries and public spaces
- Increasing our resources to improve connections and coordination between Council services and health services and other organisations working with community members in need
- Working closely with Victoria Police
- Continuously exploring ways to make our public spaces safer and more attractive and welcoming for everyone in our community, including proposed improvements to the Sunshine Library entrance.
Any incidents of illegal or antisocial behaviour should be reported to Victoria Police by calling 000. If these are witnessed inside a Council building, please inform staff members, who can call police for you.
