State budget to deliver on Sunshine Superhub

Brimbank Council welcomes the news that the Allan Labor Government, in partnership with the Albanese Labor Government, will kickstart works on the Sunshine Station redevelopment as soon as possible.

“We are delighted that the Allan State Government has included $4 billion in its 2025/26 budget to kick start works on the Sunshine Station redevelopment. This is wonderful news for the west, and Brimbank in particular. We look forward to seeing shovels in the ground soon, and the transformation of Sunshine Station and surrounds,” said Mayor of Brimbank Cr Thuy Dang.

The $4 billion announced as part of the Victorian Budget 2025/26, brings forward $2 billion of the government’s investment in Melbourne Airport Rail (MAR). This will help fast track the project to build a new transport superhub in Sunshine as the key to delivering Melbourne Airport Rail and the first step for electrification to Melton.

In February, Council had welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement of an additional $2 billion in Federal Funding for the MAR and the transformation of Sunshine Station into a transport superhub.

Council has been advocating for appropriate timelines for both the development of Sunshine Station and the implementation of the Sunshine Station Masterplan, campaigning for the Melbourne Airport Rail to be delivered before the third runway opens in 2031.

These projects are urgently needed to support the economic growth, housing needs and development of Melbourne’s western region.

The redevelopment of Sunshine Station, into an equivalent of the Southern Cross in the west, along with the complete delivery of the Sunshine Station Masterplan is critical to the success of the Melbourne Airport Rail project.

Sunshine is one of Melbourne’s most complex and critical rail junctions. Its reconfiguration will benefit all Victorians and visitors, especially those travelling from the airport, throughout the west and into the regions of Sunshine, Ballarat, Bendigo, and Geelong.

Brimbank Council continues to call for the funding needed to ensure the full implementation of the Sunshine Station Masterplan to reposition Sunshine as greater Melbourne’s next CBD – a key visitor economy hub, generating 30,000 new jobs and housing for more than 40,000 new residents in the west – addressing the nation’s housing shortage.

““Brimbank Council will continue to work closely with State and Federal Governments to see these opportunities realised for the west, bringing jobs and economic growth to our communities,” continued Brimbank Mayor Cr Thuy Dang.

The Sunshine Precinct is listed in Infrastructure Australia’s priority list of projects as being of national significance. It is also the only location in Melbourne that the State Government has declared a Metropolitan Activity Centre, a National Employment and Innovation Centre, a Priority Precinct and a Transport Super Hub.
