There’s something beautiful and inviting about a garden that attracts local wildlife — butterflies and bees resting on flowers and plants, the sounds of birds tweeting, frogs croaking, or the discovery of a lizard taking shelter under a rock. These are all signs of a garden in harmony with nature.
Now there’s help for Brimbank residents who want to make their garden a safe and happy place for native wildlife with the free Brimbank Gardens for Wildlife program.
Native plants are easy to care for, save time, and create safe havens for local plants and animals.
Brimbank Council, volunteers, and community members have come together to create the Gardens for Wildlife program. They can visit you and provide advice about things like the types of shelter, plants, and water features that attract local wildlife.
What is a wildlife garden?
Wildlife gardens are designed to appeal to local wildlife, and there are many simple things people can do, including:
- Choose different native plants that flower at different times during the year
- Provide dense, prickly shrubs that offer shelter for small birds
- Include plants that attract insects because insects attract birds, lizards and frogs
- Add logs and rocks for lizards and skinks
- Encourages birds, gliders and possums that love tree hollows and nesting boxes
Renters and property owners in Brimbank can apply for a visit from trained volunteers who will provide tips about how to improve their gardens for wildlife.
