Brimbank Council congratulates Uncle Shane Charles on his induction into Aboriginal Honour Roll.
“On behalf of Brimbank City Council, I warmly congratulate Uncle Shane Charles on becoming one of the nine inductees into the Victorian Government’s Aboriginal Honor Roll this year,” said Brimbank Mayor Cr Thuy Dang. “This is a well-deserved honour. Uncle Shane is known for his tireless efforts in working to advance Reconciliation, and his commitment inspires us all.”
Brimbank Council has welcomed the Victorian Government’s induction of its First Nations leader Uncle Shane Charles into the Victorian Aboriginal Honour Roll, which celebrates the achievements of Aboriginal Victorians and their dedication to making Victoria a more inclusive, fair and united place.

“I feel blessed and honoured by this recognition,” Uncle Shane said in response. “It’s been a privilege to work in my community for the years that I have.”
“My journey is one of resilience. I have been taught by my Elders, both my cultures and across community business.”
Uncle Shane is a highly experienced and inspirational First Nations leader, with a solid track record across a range of sectors including local government, education and training, justice, and cultural heritage. He has effectively managed complex partnerships and has been successful in brokering solutions between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal parties, both locally and internationally.
Speaking about his leadership both here at home and overseas, Uncle Shane said “I am passionate about finding opportunities for capacity building to develop the community and to build relationships with and for my peoples.”
“I like to focus on brokering solutions and supporting the community in any way I can, building relationships with governments and services with community, and I remain committed to working to make our country more inclusive, fair and united.”
Since September 2024, Uncle Shane Charles has been the First Nations lead at Brimbank City Council. His work involves leading the Council to strategically embed a whole of Council and community approach to Reconciliation, through overseeing the implementation of Council’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2024-26 which reaffirms Council’s vision for Reconciliation.
“Over the years Uncle Shane has done extraordinary work in advancing Reconciliation in Brimbank as a cultural advisor, and as co-chair of our Brimbank Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committee (BATSICC),” said Mayor Cr Dang.
“Today in his role as First Nations lead at Brimbank City Council, Uncle Shane is continuing to do incredible work in embedding a whole of Council and community approach to Reconciliation in Brimbank,” said Mayor Cr Dang in conclusion.
