Rich in Aboriginal heritage and spectacular natural beauty, yaluk barring park in Keilor North was the ideal place for a joint celebration of National Reconciliation Week and World Environment Day on 31 May 2025.
Celebrations commenced with a very special Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Wurundjeri Elder John Terrick, against the dramatic backdrop of the ancient volcanic plains and valleys carved by the waterways of Jacksons Creek, Deep Creek, and Maribyrnong River.

John shared his history growing up on Country at Bung Yarnda (Lake Tyres Mission) and encouraged everyone to get involved in caring for Country.
Wurundjeri educator, Jack George, shared stories of his people’s history, language, and culture during a tour of a section of restored vegetation.
The event attracted several young, budding geologists, eager to learn more about volcanoes from an expert. Geotechnical engineer, Lucas Pardo, from Geelong Regional Engineers Group, did not disappoint. He led a fascinating tour of the park’s unique rock formations, which finished up with a chance to yarn over a cuppa and morning tea at Jacksons Creek.
Brimbank Council would like to thank the Wurundjeri Council and Geelong Regional Engineers Group for helping to make this event so special and memorable. This initiative was supported by the Victorian Government through the Green Links Grant Program.
