Celebrate Neighbourhood House Week

Join us for the many events being held across Brimbank during Neighbourhood House Week 13-19 May 2024 to celebrate your local community. To explore what’s on during the week, go to brimbank.vic.gov.au.

The theme of the week is ‘Stronger Together’, something you can see and feel when you spend some time together with others from your local community at one of our Neighbourhood Houses or Community Centres.

Brimbank City Council operates six Neighbourhood Houses and Community Centres over seven sites:

Cairnlea Community Hub
Hunt Club Community and Arts Centre
West Sunshine Community Centre
Westvale Community Centre
Delahey Community Centre
Sydenham Neighbourhood House and
Keilor Community Hub Program Spaces.

Brimbank Mayor Cr Ranka Rasic said: “These are friendly and inclusive spaces where community groups can gather for social connections, work on projects, share culture, play and learn, or where you can come to read or relax in a safe space close to home.

“If you’re feeling like getting out of the house, learning a new skill, want to start or join a group, make some new friends or catch up with old ones, take a look at the full program of events for Neighbourhood House Week 13-19 May and come along,” Mayor Rasic said.

Brimbank also has several non-Council run Neighbourhood Houses, such as CommUnity Plus Neighbourhood House, Duke Street Community House, Kororoit Creek Neighbourhood House Association, St Albans Community Youth Club (The Tin Shed) and Cooinda, a newly established Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Hub.

More about Neighbourhood Houses and Community Centres
These were first established in Victoria in the wake of the social changes of the 1970s as a specific response to women wishing to have time away from the home.

According to the historic timeline of Neighbourhood Houses in Victoria, there were 12 houses in 1976 for empowering, caring, sharing and developing better educational opportunities for women. Today there are more than 400 Neighbourhood Houses/Community Centres in Victoria, each one a unique reflection of its community. In an average week, more than 200,000 Victorians will visit their local Neighbourhood House.
