International Women’s Day celebrations

Investing in Women in Brimbank

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and is celebrated globally on 8 March.

The United Nations (UN) theme for IWD 2024 is Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress.

This year we have an early gathering for International Women’s Day on 6 March and invite you to join us for afternoon tea and a panel discussion at Watergardens Town Centre.

“International Women’s Day is an opportunity for Council to show leadership in driving positive cultural change as we embrace equity,” said Brimbank Mayor Cr Ranka Rasic.

“In keeping with this year’s United Nation’s theme, Brimbank Council believes women’s economic empowerment is central to a gender equal world, and when women are given equal opportunities to earn, learn and lead, then entire communities thrive.”

Audiences will be able to listen to a keynote address by Maria Dimopolous, Board Chair of Safe + Equal, followed by a discussion with guest panellists.

Panellists include:

  • Gazal Kamali, Franchise Business Owner of Quest Watergardens
  • Madaesya Palavi-Lyons, young Aboriginal woman and Brimbank City Council staff member
  • Ngoc Nicky Chung, Chief Executive Officer Australian Vietnamese Women’s Association

“I encourage everyone to check out our program of events on Council’s website and book their place now to take part in the celebrations,” said Cr Rasic.
